Whaaaat? What for? Why there? Huh? All these words were accompanied by looks of doubt or amazement as sister Jill and I told our friends we were taking a driving trip to Iowa to celebrate her special birthday. Playing baseball at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville was top on her list.  And, of course, because I knew about the Official Iowa Pie Trail and the impromptu ones that pop up during the Pedaling Across Iowa Bike Race, I planned on eating as many pies as possible. So, following the Iowa motto NPR (no pie refused!) off we went for amazing experiences both planned and serendipitous.

People: While searching for pies, we experienced the caring and charm of the people of Iowa. For example, with explanations and a recommendation from our server at the Ox Yoke Inn in the Amana Colonies we sampled the signature Sour Cream Raisin and a Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. In Cedar Rapids, the Pie Trail led us to Kathy’s Pies and Bakery where we bought two slices to eat on the spot. We also bought an entire rhubarb pie which we shared with the mother-daughter team of evening receptionist and morning hostess at our hotel who welcomed us as we began and ended each day. In Dubuque, while riding the funicular to have an overview of the city, we met a newly engaged couple who could not contain their excitement and gave us the honor of being the second people (after their parents) with whom they shared the news; they also pointed out city highlights from our glorious view and suggested possible places for pies.

Places: Try Pie in Waterloo, Iowa. I am always on the lookout for unusual pie places and new recipes for pies. Try Pie met both criteria! This bakery epitomizes the community caring spirit of Iowa with their mission to “Empower a diverse group of teen girls with life and leadership skills through meaningful work”. We found the girls to be both knowledgeable and excellent teachers.

Pies: At Try Pie, we started with the blueberry-peach mini pie. The peaches were so fresh that I had to ask about the technique; the server had the answer: use fresh frozen peaches.

Soon a “regular” arrived to order a Pie Shake. Now, I had to learn how to make that. With the helpful tutoring of another teen, I received step-by-step instructions. Start by filling the pitcher of a blender with ice cream…a flavor that complements the pie is a good choice. Next, take a slice of pie (or a mini pie in this case) and put it on top. Blend until smooth and then top with whipped cream. Voila, a Pie Shake!
