After enjoying our trip through The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we headed to Asheville NC. Among the many reasons we wanted to go there in addition to great food, interesting museums, gorgeous botanical gardens, and numerous artists at their studios was the opportunity to go to the Baked Pie Company in south Asheville.
People: Friendly owners who make a drive to south Asheville worthwhile.
Places: The Baked Pie Company (http://www.bakedpiecompany.com) This pie place has the ambiance of a coffee shop: cozy with tables, coffee bar, books, puzzles, and people of all ages enjoying pie. The Baked Pie Company also serves a flight of pies, (“Flights are not just for beers,” as they say here), which includes a choice of three slices of pies and a dish of ice cream.
Pies: When I am faced with a refrigerated pie case, I tend to choose the one that I have never tasted or the one that is the most unusual. Here, it was the Buckeye Pie. If you are from Ohio, you know that a buckeye is a nut from a tree and named after a deer’s (buck’s) eye. It is edible if roasted but otherwise poisonous. The Buckeye Pie, although resembling the nut, is a riff on buckeye candy made with peanut butter and chocolate. To me, the pie tasted liked a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup; it was very, very rich.
Pie Pal Linda chose the Coconut Cream pie, her favorite, and gave this one high marks. Even though we did not finish what we had ordered, we also bought a flight of pies, one of which was the signature Honey Pecan Pie. Our server packaged our remaining pies, and we enjoyed them again the next day when we stopped at a roadside picnic table for lunch.
No one can say we are pie quitters! We ended our visit to Asheville with a Shepherd’s pie at an Irish Pub while we listened to an amazing Blue Grass Band.
Sounds wonderful! Banana crème is Steve’s favorite! The buckeye I have never heard of as a pie flavor. I of course like your lemon meringue!🥰
Sure wish I had a piece for my BD this week.🤷🏼♀️☺️
Maybe this spring for a special treat. It is my daughter Margaret’s favorite too. I also favor rhubarb strawberry pie. Take care you pie “crazy ladies”!.🤣
