This Christmas, trying our best to be adventurous while once again experiencing “Covid Christmas Cancellations” and wanting to follow precautions, my sister gave me the gift of an opportunity to eat pie in an igloo. Well, it was not really an “ice” igloo, but rather an enclosed (and heated!) dome.
People: Sisters, who, at a moment’s notice, can pivot plans and discover something fun to do.
Places: Fair Oaks Farms. Fair Oaks Farms in Fair Oaks, Indiana is a working farm and agrotourism center. The farm raises dairy cattle and chickens, fruits and vegetables, and corn and soybeans in and around Fair Oaks. There are educational experiences for people of all ages, including the Dairy Adventure (where we watched a birth of a calf), the Pig Adventure, and the Crop Adventure.
A large restaurant serves a “farm-to-table” menu. During the winter, the restaurant places four “igloos” overlooking a prairie and a forest which, at Christmas time, are strung with colored lights.
Pies: Of course, we ordered pies for lunch. My sister had a divine chicken pot pie. The filling featured pulled chicken, farm-fresh vegetables, and was topped with a flaky domed crust. We shared the apple pie made with apples from the on-site orchard. The pie, with its decorative lattice crust, was served perched on a caramel drizzle with both ice cream and whipped cream on the side (this is a dairy farm after all).
