One of the highlights of our sisters’ week in the Black Hills, was viewing Mount Rushmore. For our first visit, we went at dusk and, as we rounded a bend in the road leading to Mount Rushmore National Monument, we had an amazing view of the mountain and the famous sculpture of four Presidents. We entered the Monument grounds just in time to participate in the closing ceremony. As it turned dark, with the amphitheater filled to capacity, we watched a film that explained the sculpting of the monument and the selection of the presidents to be enshrined there. The ceremony closed as veterans were invited to the stage for recognition while the audience sang “America the Beautiful.” No pie can top this moving ceremony!

But…when we came back the next day to go to the Visitors Center, we spotted the Purple Pie Place, and made a quick U-turn! Here, we divided and conquered trying the ice cream, the bumble berry pie, and the signature raspberry rhubarb jalapeno pie. Rhubarb is a popular ingredient in this area: we saw a rhubarb winery and most of the restaurants were serving rhubarb pie.

People: Presidents honored by their sculptures on Mount Rushmore: George Washington, celebrating the birth of our democracy; Thomas Jefferson who, with the Louisiana Purchase, spurred our country’s growth; Theodore Roosevelt fostered the country’s development; and Abraham Lincoln, honored for the preservation of the union.

Places: Bobkat’s Purple Pie Place is a restaurant, bakery, and ice cream parlor all under one purple roof. Its motto is “making the world taste better one pie at a time.” Located at 9 Mt. Rushmore Road in Custer, South Dakota, it is well positioned to attract tourists! http://purplepieplace.com/

Pies: Raspberry Rhubarb Jalapeno Pie. The raspberry rhubarb pie, was served with a twist….of jalapeno pepper. Some would say that a good raspberry rhubarb pie should stand on its own, but the pepper delivers a sucker punch as an aftertaste to the sweet flavor of the raspberry and rhubarb filling. The peppers are mixed into the filling, but removed before pouring the filling into the crust. One could give this pie as much “zing” as needed depending on the number of peppers used to flavor the filling! I recommend just two!

Instructions
  1. Use your favorite recipe for raspberry rhubarb or strawberry rhubarb pie. When mixing the ingredients for the filling toss in a sliced jalapeno pepper or two or three and let the filling heat up while rolling out the crust. Before pouring the filling into the crust, remove the peppers----do not forget this step! Bake according to your recipe. When the pie is completely cool, eat a slice to test your taste buds!

I found the beginning of your raspberry rhubarb jalapeno pie, but the instructions aren’t included.
(Sept 2018). Could you send me the complete recipe, please? It’s so over-the-top fabulous at the magnificent Purple Pie Place, I’d love to try to make one half as good here in Florida! Thanks!
