Recently, I had an opportunity to go to Annapolis, Maryland and my sister and granddaughter, Kristen, joined me (to eat pie, of course.) We started our day with a brunch at Carrol’s Creek Café overlooking the Severn River, a part of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and watched boats coming in and out of the harbor on this lovely day.  We had the eggs Benedict on top of a Maryland crab cake. Knowing that we would have a pie later in the day, we visualized having a crab-filled savory pie that would honor the signature seafood of Maryland.

Before getting our pie fix, we went on the guided walking tour of United States Naval Academy. The Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The tour includes a visit to the sports complex which looks like an Olympic swimming training facility! We learned that to graduate from the Academy, all the midshipmen must be able to jump from the highest diving platform and swim for 30 minutes with their clothes on! The plaque in the Great Hall says it all.

We also toured the Maryland State House which was erected in 1772, and is the oldest United States capitol in continuous legislative use. In these chambers, George Washington gave his historic farewell address as he resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

People: Midshipmen who never give up the ship. Both men and women are called midshipmen with about 20 per cent of the current class composed of women.

Pie: Cherry Pie with crumb topping. On this glorious fall day, we ended our visit by walking around historic downtown Annapolis in search of a pie. We decided, on a recommendation from Google, to try a pie at the highly rated Chick and Ruth’s Delly. Unfortunately, there was no crab pie on the menu, so instead, we chose the cherry pie with crumb topping in honor of George Washington.
