Pies have their way of creating community, and this is particularly true on Pi Day, March 14 (3.14). Once again, the Pilates Indy Inc studio has been the gathering place for villagers, merchants, and clients of Pilates Indy Inc. who want to celebrate Pi Day with Pie and Lattes at the Pilates studio. This year there are more bakeries than ever in this cozy neighborhood. Four bakeries and a Popcorn Shop (yes Just Pop In Popcorn Shop and Café celebrates Pi day with Apple Pie and Cherry Pie popcorn which surprisingly do taste like pie when you have a mouthful!) contributed to the celebration.

The event includes a pie judging. The newbies, Pots and Pans Pie Co., won first prize for their Black Bottom Frangipane Pie. One of the judging criteria was “which pie makes you most curious to taste it?” The judge noted that the pie tasters were asking each other what they thought was in this pie, and were using their cell phones to find out just what frangipane was!

People: Katie Wright, the owner of the Pilates Indy Inc studio is the prime mover for generating community spirit both inside and outside of the studio. The studio is located in the center of the village adjacent to the Monon Trail, a re-purposed train track connecting the Northside of Indianapolis to its downtown, and now used for bike riding, rollerblading, and walking. In addition to hosting the Broad Ripple Pi Day Celebration, Katie supports the Broad Ripple Village Art Walk, and other events which keeps the community spirit in the Village alive.

Places: Broad Ripple Village, Indianapolis, IN. Broad Ripple Village, established in 1836 is one of seven cultural districts in Indianapolis. According to Forbes Magazine’s List of 12 Things that Make a Neighborhood Truly Great, such as outdoor activities, good restaurants, and nightlife, Broad Ripple Village has it all, and pies and lattes too.

Pies: The Pi Day celebration featured a parade of home-made and bakery-made pies and Popcorn. The Black Bottom Frangipane Pie received the top honors. So, are you curious to know what frangipane is? It is an almond-flavored pastry cream used in pies and pastries, made with almond paste, butter, sugar, eggs and flour. According to the bakery, the pie has a chocolate ganache spread across the bottom of a tender pie shell, and is then filled with creamy almond custard (frangipane) and topped with toasted slivered almonds. The pie is creamy with that special almond flavor. If your taste buds start at the top of the pie and work their way down, you will finish with a wonderful lingering taste of dark chocolate.

Happy Pi Day!
